Snowboarding is a sport that is inspired by surfing and skateboarding.
Sherman Poppen is credited with developing the first snowboard in the 1960s when he joined together 2 skis for his children to stand up on and steer with rope attached to the nose.
These were later manufactured commercially.
In the 1970s Jake Burton Carpenter started manufacturing Burton Snowboards.
In 1994 Snowboarding was declared an Olympic sport. It debuted at the 1998 Olympic games in Nagano, Japan.
By the year 2000 snowboarding was the worlds fastest growing sport.
Snowboarding is also credited with revolutionizing the ski industry by inspiring ski manufacturers to create skis that are shorter and more maneuverable.
